StartHub Women have advocated for the preservation of wildlife and planting of trees to check deforestation.
Deforestation has not only negatively affected the natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate, it is responsible for the extinction of wild life animals.
Speaking during events to commemorate the World Wildlife Day (WWD), in select schools in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Convener, Starthub Women, Mrs Youth Johnson said there was need for the preservation of wildlife and planting of more trees, adding that yearly indicators and reports of the extinct of some species of wild animals is a threat to the biodiversity.
Ndifreke Thompson, a Code Like A Pro (CLAP) Instructor who represented Johnson at the event stated that this affects the valuable roles and functions of wild animals in the balance of the ecosystem, adding that the major importance of wildlife is their support in maintaining healthy balance in the ecosystem.
“WWD is an avenue to create awareness on the need for wild life preservation by carrying out events like deforestation and planting of trees” she said.
She mentioned that the laws prohibiting wild life hunting and zoo keeping as some of the tips on wild life conservation, and listed some wild life animals going extinct.
During their presentation, children in both primary and secondary levels in Gilgal International School mentioned the the provision of raw materials for production as one of the importance of wild life.
Tips on wild life conservation highlighted include: laws prohibiting wild life hunting, zoo keeping, etc. A list of wild life animals in extinction were an interesting part of the event highlighted.
The elephant was listed as one of the animals going into extinct because its trunk is sort for and hunted by man. The elephant is the largest land mammal with sensitive skin that can go burnt as a result of heat.
The rhino which is the second largest land mammal going extinct, has two distinct species existing in Africa – the white rino is in extinction because its horn is sort for and mostly used for magic and other purposes.
The hippo is the third largest animal. It stays in the mud because of its sensitive skin.
Responding on behalf of the school, the ICT lab instructor, Teacher Godwin Otu, commended StartHub Women for creating the opportunity for the students to learn about wild life conservation and it’s effect on the human cycle and the ecosystem.
“The students learnt a lot. I heard one of the students saying that it’s the first time to hear about the rhino to be a land animal. World Wild Life Day has added value to Gilgal International School” he said.
The 2025 World Wildlife theme is: ” Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet “.
